Grand Island High School is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. GIHS is pursing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy – a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that GIHS believes is important for our students.
The first contingent of GIHS faculty attended training at Rice University in Houston, TX October 11-13, 2009. Mrs. Cheryl Chamberlain (Creativity, Action, Service - CAS), Mrs. Carrie Earnst (IB Coordinator), Mr. Jeffrey Green (Environmental Systems & Societies), and Mr. Jerry Parisi (IB Administrator) received training in the development and implementation of the IB Diploma Programme. This programme will provide Grand Island students an additional opportunity to earn college credits in variety of areas of study. Our current ninth graders will be the first class with the opportunity to earn an IB diploma.
As stated by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), “the Diploma Programme is a challenging, broad and balanced two-year programme of international education for students aged 16 to 19. Students are required to study six subjects and a curriculum core concurrently. The programme is designed to equip students with the basic academic skills needed for university study, further education and their chosen profession, as well as developing the values and life skills needed to live a fulfilled and purposeful life.” (p. 1, Diploma Programme: A basis for practice)
